WIRELESS DESKTOP
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:07:28 PM »

Ok, I have been doing some searching and I am trying to make my desktop wireless.  From what I found it says either a USB or a wireless PCI adapter.  Are they the only way to go?  I want my pc fast, well as fast as I can get it while being wireless.  My router will be in the same room as my desktop, just not close enough to run a cable, and I don't want cables all over my house.  My desktop will be maybe, 8 feet from the router.  What is the best way to go?

Its not going to make that much of a difference running wireless on "ping" times when gaming, maybe extra 1 or 2 ping is all. As for file transfer, not that big of a deal as well.

To start what wireless router are you using or haven't you gotten one yet, so you need both the card and router?

I have a wirless router.  It is a Belkin Wireless G router.  Is that good or should I step it up a bit?   It seems to work ok with my Playstation 3, which is in my living room right now, and the router is in another room.  I have very little, if any lag.

This is the one I have.

N gives you 2x+ the speed over G. Its up to you if you want to upgrade or not on the router. If not then get a card that is N and G, this way you will have the card to handle the N if and when you get that N router, if they still sell both N and G.

I think there is also a "N1", I know nothing about it, but I would have to assume it is even faster (maybe more stable of stray signals?) then N.

Myself, I like Linksys for networking (but I am not a pro networker so better could be out there)... http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/viewcategory.htm?categoryId=551966 . Go to Newegg to buy IMO.

G card (I could have missed it, but I didn't see N and G)... http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/adapters/Linksys-WMP54G-Adapter-Front-Page_stcVVproductId53934605VVcatId552009VVviewprod.htm

I usually buy Linksys, they have good equipment.  I am also thinking about upgrading as you said.  That was just a quick fix when I moved in here to get my net and stuff up and running.  Thanks.  All I have to do is fix these little blue screens, which I think I may have, and then I will get that stuff.  Thanks ReLoaded.

I have a Trendnet TEW-633GR.  I had if for 2 plus years and dick-ed it up when I tried to flash the firmware.  Call tech support and found it has a 3 year warranty. They couldn't fix it so they sent me a new one.

Trendnet FTW

the belkin will do, just get a cheap usb card and have at it. pay $$$ more and maybe get a 2 to 5 % performance increase. your choice.

Ok, got the cp working pretty good now.  I have one more question, is there such thing as too much ram?  One of the ram sticks I got in the mail is bad, go figure.  I am sending it back to get a new one.  I am also thinking about buying another 2 gig stick, because I am used to running 4.  Now, when I get that other 2 gig stick back, that will put me at 6 gigs.  Will my cp work faster or will it basically stay the same?  I would like to know before I go out buying more.  Thanks.

No you could never have to much ram (if, see "if" below), BUT all ram should be the same manufacture (well yes and no, but it is best), same size, speed, timing and so on to get the best performance.

If... (from above) you are using 32bit OS, the ram wont be seen over 3gb... So say you are using XP 64bit then you are GTG with as much ram the computer will take, but if using XP 32bit then only 3gb will be seen... So you just spent extra money on ram that will never be used by the 32bit OS. In short, 64bit OS, then RAM her up she will use all of it.

Run faster? Yes and no. It will load programs faster, it will write faster, it will read faster, but it wont "compute" faster. Your CPU is the "speed" of the computer, the more RAM you have the more the Hard Drive can spill out for the next task because the RAM can store the extra info waiting to be used.

Lets use BF1942 gaming for example (I know bad example, just for fun)... There are 2 players/computers. You have more RAM then the other person, but you both have the same CPU, you having more RAM will get you in the game faster, faster loading of the Map, so you will be sitting there waiting for other player, but once the other player loads the map, you two having the same CPU makes it a even playing field. I hope that makes sense  :-\

Makes perfect sense!  Thanks.  Now I just have to go home and check to see what OS I am running.  I do believe it is only 32.  I want to make sure though.  Thanks for your help!

Ok, what is a good or great wireless router?  Plus, I have a usb wirless adapter for my desktop.  Is it better to get and actual card?  I mean my net starts up and runs fine.  I want a good a good set up so I can play bf42 and be on vent without or little lag.  Make sense?  I think my router is a piece of shit, and I am willing to get a new one, I just want to make sure it is a good one and I won't have to go update every freaking year.

Ok 1st lets see what your speed is, run this test http://www.speedtest.net and post the result (use the recommended server), this is mine for a example of what to post...

(look for "copy forum link" and post that link)

I'll tell you right off, if you are not showing a down load speed of at least 4.0 Mp/s and a upload of .50 Mp/s, your connection is not going to give you a perfect Vent/BF42 at the same time connection.

EDIt... I'll be back in a few, I have to take care of the little one getting off the bus.

I will be able to do this when I hit the house.  I am at my office right now.  I will be heading that way in about an 45 mins.  Then I will post it.
