PSU?
« on: December 24, 2006, 04:48:26 AM »

Ok, I am not 100% sure on this yet, but hopefully I can upgrade my system soon.
I think I'm going to buy an 8800 GTS (Nvidia). For that I need a new PSU.
And now I am wondering whiche PSU should I get? Because the 8800GTS does need a good PSU. It doesn't have to be a SLI ready PSU, cause I think one 8800GTS is enough (lol). Any tips on like what Voltage to get, and Ampères? Or just a powersupply you'd recommend me?

The specs should be like this after upgrading:
CPU: E6300 (right now I have a celeron 3.2Ghz, but I'm gonna replace that one with an E6300)
Memory: 1024 MB DDR2-533
Videocard: 8800GTS
Motherboard:  Asrock CONROE XFIRE-Esata2
HDD: 160 gB

So the CPU needs to be enough for that system, plus an extra gig of ram, and a soundcard (comming up whenever I have the money).

Thanks,

Boemann

My current PSU is a 400W Codegen PSU. I want a different one, because I want something that is actually quiet, instead of this one that makes some crap ass noise.  And a 500W should be fine yes, but its about the Ampères. I read somewhere that you need like 24A on the +12V for the system to be stabile. Or thats what Nvidia recommended anyways.

Ah here, I found it:

Warning: Nvidia recommends a 400W or greater power supply with 12V current rating of 26A for GeForce 8800GTS and a 450W or greater power supply with 12V current rating of 30A for GeForce 8800GTX.

nVidia recommends a 400-watt or greater power supply with a 12-volt rating of 26 amperes

Did you read this?
http://reviews.cnet.com/Nvidia_GeForce_8800_GTS/4505-8902_7-32143069.html

So anything above a good 400-watt power supply should be good enough for now. If you plan on putting that soundcard in along with other pc mods, maybe go for 500-watt one.

Right now, I have 650-watt power supply which is great for me. Good for expansion in the future.

Someone posted that in a thread that I read

I wonder what you need for the 9 series, a nuclear powerplant?

So now all I have to find is a 500W powersupply that has 26A on the 12V rail?
