floppy question
« on: December 13, 2005, 01:16:08 PM »

ok i have a floppy disk that has some pictures on it. i can see the pictures on the floppy and know they work but i havn't looked at them; in a long time. i tried to open them today but they said they could not be opened. i tried to get them on word but they said it preformed and illegal operation and shut the program down. they are in jpg form and i tried to open them just in a picture program but again didn't work. said was wrong format or something. is there a way i can get them to open, or are they lost.

I bet they are lost. If you had it close to anything magnetic or just rubbed it too much itll trash the disk. Thats why they tell you if you are going off on business make sure you dont carry your jump drives though all the metal dectors. There's a chance they could fry them. Im sure you are smart enough not to be screwing up opening them so yeah...

Well for one, check the floppy tab and make sure it is not in the lock position.  The lock tab is on the back of a floppy disk on one of the corners, and if you don't know how to move the tab then don't use floppies, ever.  If that isn't the case then the files must be corrupt.

Did you go into "My Computer" and click on the 3 1/2 drive? Anyhow, do that again and hit "Properties" and see what the file size is, try to click on the disk and see if a window pops up with a file or files, try clicking on "Explore" and see what comes up, so on and so on.

I bet you have jpeg pics on the disk like you said, BUT you or someone could have used a zip program of sorts as well (is there a password on the disk?).

IF you can see the files, copy and past them ALL in a new folder, after that see if you can read them then. By the way, for a fail safe program to read them make sure you are opening them up in "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer", then if windows can't open them, it will tell you what program to use or if something is wrong with the file.

The tab lock is only for writing to the disk, it has nothing to do with reading the disk.

Don't get rid of that disk until we look into it more and you give more info.

In the past I have used a program called FlopShow when trying to recover corrputed or lost files from a floppy disk. For the most part it is touch and go with this program concerning getting files back but it couldn't hurt to try.

Well first off you need to get that floppy hard then you may be able to get some data out of it in most cases a womans touch can get more data out of it than you could.

You could try to get a recovery program. For me, I would use a CD for pics and video files because floppys are only reliable for written stuff.
