Title: MAFIA Forum work...
Post by: Loaded on July 10, 2008, 01:19:17 PM
I have been working on the forums today to try and get the forums to load faster, not to stop responding (SMF error page) and so on.

So far I have updated the version of the forum to to the most newest "stable" release.

I have been working on the structure of the site to stop all errors from being made, very time consuming I should add. So far so good on the errors. Right now the only errors that are coming up is for "Guests". So if you come to the site and have to sign in, your "ip" will make an error happen, you can check this by looking at your IP in your profile (if you have permission set to do so), just click on the IP and that will open another page, check that page for errors and there should be a "Guest" next to that error statement and NOT your forum name. The good news is that I do know where the error is being made, it is on the front page, the bad news is I have to track it down, but I do believe it is a permission problem. But again with good news, this error should have nothing to do with the stability of the site.

We were having 100s of pages of errors a day and now I am sure we are down to 10s of pages a day, again all made by Guests of the forum, not by anyone with a sign in name that "is signed in".

With all said, if we get slow downs again or error pages when coming to the site, I am 99.9% sure it has nothing to do with the forum program, but more then likely the Host and or Server.

That's it for now.

Oh...

So why post this info? This site belongs to all of you and I feel any work that gets done here is everyone's business. After all, if you come here and things aren't working correctly, I am sure you want to know why. And it goes without saying, if you think it is all "bla bla", you don't have to read it  ;) but the info is here for you.

If you have anything to add, please post them.

(I am not sure if this is in the right place for this thread, kind of News, but again problems/fixes could be placed here as well, maybe it should be a sticky somewhere)

EDIT... The shout box is now able to be seen by Guests, but not posted in, this will stop non members from spamming and maybe doing other "bad stuff", but still see the "fun" going on in the box (this was a fix for Bone, he wanted non members to see the box, but not post in it).
I set it back the way it was for a member here, no biggie one way or the other.

I liked being able to see the shoutbox without logging in. I thought that was a good move on your part. Its annoying having to type your username and password just to see what people are ranting on about. Any forum member can see it anyway so I don't see the problem with it just staying up all the time, well thats just my opinion anyway. Also it would be nice to view the past 50 posts again if possible because I miss alot of the chat when it disappears after 20 posts. Apart from that the site seems to be running smooth, good job.

I guess it doesn't matter, but Meangreen asked for it that way... I'll let her say why (I know not a "member" but she still comes here everyday)... I guess I'll let you all (members) decide, just let me know.

The shout box... I am seeing if there is a work around, but after the update that Bone did awhile back the maker of the program changed somethings and it isn't right, as in, no one can see the last 50 shouts (even me in the admin panel, but they are all there, you have to delete one to see the next older) and the Mafia colors aren't showing up. I know you can't see it, but until the other day I couldn't even see any words near the settings for the box, but I fixed that. I'll get it working, it just will take sometime.

Not likely, but more toward getting fucked with a bit more and not having the access to the files, I'm sure you know what I am talking about.

Just a FYI... A complete data back up of this site is happening automatically once a week on Saturdays at 4am est and is being stored on the clans FTP.

I also will be making a back up of the forum once a week on Wednesdays sometime in the late evening and that will be stored on my computer.

2 back ups per week stored in 2 different places.

I have change the back ups... Back ups will happen to the FTP 1 time a day at 4am EST and will be saved on the clans FTP, after 7 files are saved I will remove the 6 later files. Then 2 back ups a week saved to my computer on Wednesday and Sunday, time will be late night when down loaded to my computer.

With this back up schedule the worse case would be 72hrs/96hrs of lost post/info, if somehow we lost the clans FTP hard drive and the Host hadn't backed that drive up, highly unlikely all would crash at the same time.

Maybe I am being a bit extreme with the back ups, but I do not want this clans past and future info ever lost.

The only error message you should be getting is the one on the front of my pants where it says "danger!  contents under extreme pressure".

Is there any way to make this forum look better for widescreen users? I have about 3.5 inches of empty black space on either side of the forum.

Not easily, lot of things would have to change and mess it up for the poor people  :P that don't have wide screens... I know how you feel, I run a 22".

I have a 24 inch screen and the site is just fine for me.  If you have bigger then that, I need to kick you in the balls!!!
