Its fantastic what you can do when you turn on your TV to music channels and rub your hands up and down the guitar!

Sorry, I think this is fake.

your a dumb bitch, it's Far Beyond The Sun by Yngwie Malmsteen.  There's a dead genre of music... called shred... which is what I play... I'll try and post a video of that song up, I'll play it for you.  It's called talent.  There's no talent in music today.

Here's some more for you...:
Jason Becker:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6366828499656022533&q=jason+becker\
Rusty Cooley:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6504813154525836790&q=rusty+cooley

Seriously, as a shred guitarist, it pisses me the fuck off to have your dumb ass even on this forum.  There's more to guitar than powerchords, which is all Blink, Sum, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, and emo bands do.

and here's Yngwie playing it himself, live (he improvs a lot of it... improving is playing off the top of your head)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4858544204595584260&q=far+beyond+the+sun

In the summers, I play for 8 hours a day, it's not something that you can just pick up and do, it takes time, and practice.  To play yngwie's stuff, it took a year at about 6 hours a day.  To understand what he played theory wise, it took another year, and it normally takes people 10 years to play as well as he does.

oh man dude, I'm a total shred head.  I've been recording my own music for about a year now, and playing it for everyone over ventrilo.  First time I saw malmsteen, I was like, zomfg! hahah, I'll always love him.  There are more technical, but he still keeps it musical, so he's one of my favorites.  Rusty's skills pwn everyone elses, he's twice as fast as malm, twice as complicated, and twice as less musical.:D

probably the only current band I like right now is Tool.  They kick major ass, you can listen to that stuff over and over and still not get what it totally means.  Adam Jones is a good guitarist, not great.  If you know about the band im talking about check out their drummer Danny Carey.  Iv never been that into drums but he is amazing.

I just don't get shred music.  Turning the volume off does not diminish its value.  Seems a horrible misinvestment of theory knowledge.  I mean... if you think shredding has orchestral qualities... why not listen to orchestrated music?

I don't see a TV in the vid.  And, seeing how I know 4 different ways to play that song, he's hitting all the correct frets.

Elliott ---- shred music is something that must be understood.  There's an emotional level only tapped into if you've played the music.  When you play it, you literally feel it through you're fingers.  You're whole body surges with this intense adrenaline rush.  First time I heard malmsteen, I was amazed, but at the same time, I was saying "wtf?!" it's mindless blabber.  Playing it is like learning a new language.  Each note, each bend, has it's own expression, and speaks to you as a vocalist says something to provoke an emotion.

Why not listen to orchestral music?  I do.  Way to keep your mind open and fresh, Elliott.  I'm a shred head, and shred heads, are the only ones who respect all music.  What can actually be defined as music, happens to be what we enjoy.  How many times do I have to tell you that I listen to orchestras? alicia keys? yes please.  Techno, bulgarian wedding music, you name it, I live it, I enjoy it.  Why limit yourself to one genre when so many genre's have so much to offer.  Punk and emo have little to offer.  There are mulitple genres that offer that same feel, 10 times over.  I'm fluent in violin, viola, cello, and bass.  Is that a major achievement, no.  Learn the tuning and you know the instrument.  Why do I choose guitar do you ask?  MORE.  There's more you can do with 7-8 strings, and 24 frets, than you can do with 4-5 strings and limited notes pers string on an orchestral instrument.  There's more techniques, more tones, more chords, more combinations that can be done on a guitar.  Guitars are limitless.  SHRED, music, incorporates a lot of orchestral background music to it.

If you don't want to take the time to understand shred/virtuoso/instrumentals, don't.  But, at the same time, don't say it's useless.  That's like saying German is useless because I don't speak it.

oh yeah, and that vid... I think that might be Shawn Lane.  He was a big guy nearing the end of his life, and played Vigier guitars... that's a vigier... big guy...  speaking of people who really know how to speak with a guitar, Shawn Lane...

I thought you only listened to shred music.  I was making the same point you just made.  They have little to offer?  Bad logic.  You need to identify to whom they offer what.  If the answer is "nobody" and "nothing," then you must be blind to the fact that people listen to punk and emo.  Obviously it offers something to somebody, who no doubt wouldn't call the offering "little."  Also, by saying different genres offer the same feel, you're undifferentiat ing them; again, bad logic and worthless rhetoric.

Irrelevant.  All off topic blather.  A rant.  What I said was that instead of understanding the orchestration within a guitar, focus on the orchestration within a group of instruments.  To me, that creates more interesting music and employs theory knowledge more productively.  As an aside, I encourage you to think forwardly, not backwardly.  Instead of unlocking the codes of music past and simply reveling in their complexity and genius, build.  Don't merely take apart and reassemble.  Build what has not before been built.

back to the subject, i'm not an emo fan. I can recognize the talent needed to play, it's just(in my opinion) being put to the wrong use; not that their is a wrong or right way to use your talent, just in my opinion emo is wasteful. And they have obnoxious names like "tears of inverness" or "lying in a pool of blood" or something not very creative like that. There's my 2 cents.

all right, since we're on music, I thought I would put one of the best songs ever recorded on here.  Tool is different from most any band out there, they are more like prog rock, to tell the truth I don't understand alot of what they are talking about, but thats what's fun about them, trying to figure it out.  This song is waaay more straightfoward, its about how Keenan(the main singer) wishes the whole city of LA would receive an "enima" so to speak.  Don't try to figure out the vid, Tool's vids usually suck and prob make sense in some weird way.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NthIXRH8U1k

ps: don't diss the song if you only listen to shit like korn or coldplay

Only pussies and bullshitters buy TOOL's phony image.  I'll tell you why you don't get their videos: they're bullshit teen-angst art projects.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDe6mn2q0X8&search=aphex%20twin%20fingerbib  Just watch it and enjoy it for what it is: pretty colors.  The song is Aphex Twin's Fingerbib whose beat I consider awesome.

2 Xiu Xiu songs:

(check that badass percussion) and...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co-PxM3-I9c&search=xiu%20xiu
Xiu Xiu videos may not be too enjoyable if you cannot imagine the recorded versions of the songs, but each medium brings its own strengths.

I consider this powerful art, and I consider TOOL bullshit.

just finished it, i completely dominated the english section, definitely at least 94%, and i totally bombed the math portion. It went an hour longer than it was supposed to, and one kid forgot a calculator and they didn't give him one. Surgery is finished too, now all i have to do is go to a party later tonight, sleep, and study for my finals.

damn, i was gone for the weekend, just read this....  Tool is NOT about teen angst, the song I showed you was one of their hardest songs, I just like it because it represents Maynard's(lead singer) contempt for most people and LA in particular...  Teen angst is for bands like HIM and other crap.  Obviously everyone has their opinions but to say the Maynard has a terrible voice is dead wrong.  The man can sing beautifully, and I have timed him; he can hold a scream for more than 15 secs!  May not seem like much but that is alot.  Also, in case you guys didn't know, he's also the lead singer of the softer band A Perfect Circle.  I don't like it that much(too soft for me) but they have some kickass songs, such as Judith, and the beautiful cover song of John Lennon's Imagine.  By the way, Wasserfaller, 46&2 is on the same album as the song I showed you guys.  Aenima is the title track of the album Aenima, and 46&2 is on it.  And yes, they did come out with a new album called 10,000 days on May 2nd, to tell the truth it sucked.  Not enough rock and too many subliminal messages.  Aenima was, unfortunately, the height of their career. After that they became too spiritual and hard to follow.  Not in any religious way, but im sure you can understand.  Still.... It IS nice to listen to stuff like that when your high...:D

I didn't say Maynard has a bad voice.  I said he writes bad, bullshit lyrics.

Is the song I showed you the only one of Tool's you have heard?

well dude, Tool's lyrics are weak as hell.  I mean, I don't write lyrics, and I could do a better, more thoughtful job.  At least the presentation of the lyrics is done well, even though I don't prefer it.

I'm using an Ibanez RG1527 (7 string), with Dimarzio Blaze pups... going into a Line 6 POD Xt Live > Alesis 3630 Compressor > BBE Sonic Maximizer > Carvin TS100 Poweramp w/ 6L6 tubes = Line 6 412 cab.

In other words, the only posessions I have that aren't free from craigslist, and took a looong ass time to gather the money for.:D
