Title: Music?
Post by: *MAFIA* Milky Way on September 23, 2012, 09:45:56 PM
General music and music related things thread?

I'm trying to find more indie rock bands. Suggestions? I'm looking for more bands that are similar to these.

two door cinema club
the wombats
passion pit
foster the people

Help is cool or just post whatever you're into? Also I'm thinking about learning to play the acoustic guitar. Anyone here play or can give me a little info? Beatle maybe?

The naked and famous, "Young Blood" and "Punching In a Dream"
m85, "Midnight City"
Phillip Phillips, "Home"
The Cults, "Go Outside"
Grouplove, "tongue tied"
DRIVE SOUNDTRACK, "Nightcall", "Under Your Spell", "A real Hero"
Imagine Dragons
Fun, "we are Young"
Awolnation, "Kill Your Heros"
Edward SHarpe & the Magnetic Zeros, "Home" or "Janglin"
Alex Clare, "Too Close"

When I was first interested in playing guitar I used Musicnotes.com free Guitar Guru which gave you a little sniblet of a song you wanted to play, they had a digital guitar neck and showed you where to put your fingers, once you get to know the chords, just type in the name of the song you want with chords after it in google, usually takes you to ultimate guitar chords .com
That's where I learn my songs from now.
Guitar guru is awesome for beginners though and has plenty of songs that you will know and samples are free for every song they have. You need to download the Musicnotes Suite in Free Stuff.

These aren't exactly similar, but I think they're somewhat related...

Apollo Cobra - a bit more digital sounding
"Motherland" album preview (about 30 seconds of each song):

Here's the entire album:

John Maus - "Hey Moon"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnlSA0a2X_w
This is more of a mellow sound.

Laid Back - "Cosyland"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHUegTL615w
Sounds like the 80's, but recycled in 2012 so they look/sound kinda creepy now but its still cool.

Coco Rosie - "Good Friday"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiJnSgTQFy4
This one is just weird, but if you watch/skip to 2:35, the guy has a nice beatbox.

Hem - "The Part Where You Let Go"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw97CfZtyGw
Another mellow one, best viewed as a commercial.

Magnetic Fields - "I Don't Believe You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7yePNyz-nc
Probably the closest to what you originally posted.

Grandaddy - "Stray Dog And The Chocolate Shake"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=am9wwsSiRuU
Easily the greatest video of the bunch.

Sunstroke Project - "Run Away"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECyeUYsU14E
Once you get away from the blue eye shadow, 0:41 says it all.

Eduard Khil - "I Am Glad I'm Finally Going Home"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C54IgOUUFg
If you've made it this long, you win.  This is your prize.

I will make a post later about playing guitar...

Apollo Cobra was pretty cool. I'm about to download their album. Coco Rosie - "Good Friday" was just weird. Grandaddy - "Stray Dog And The Chocolate Shake" Was probably my favorite UNTIL EPIC SAX GUY FUUUUUUUUUUUCK but your comment about the video is throwing me off. Cant tell if trolling?

I'll check yours in a little bit Malbert but Beatle just made it extremely easy for me and I'm in a lazy mood <3.

Epic nod. I've actually heard most of the songs you put up but wasn't sure of the names, I've saved almost all of them. What kind of guitar and have long have you been playing? I'm really clueless as to what type to even buy.

I have a hand me down Hohner, I will probably upgrade this winter hopefully, I'm not sure what kind. I've been playing for 2 years straight now but I originally started 5 years ago and then stopped after 6 months. The best thing to do is to go to a guitar store and play some, then which ever sounds the best to you, then you don't have to buy it there but shop around online for better prices.
Here is a website that suggests some guitars for beginners if that is what you are:

I've been adding to the collection since I made this.

MGMT
Artic Monkeys
Circa Survive
The Kooks
Marianas Trench
Of Montreal
Brand New
We Were Promise Jetpacks

and a ton of others. Still interested in getting an acoustic guitar I think but am unsure on brands or the price range I should be looking to spend. More help is needed.
