Title: Texting & Driving
Post by: *MAFIA* Beatlejuice on December 14, 2011, 06:54:41 PM
"A federal agency in charge of safety on the roads wants an outright ban on using mobile phones while driving."  Here's the article:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/14/tech/mobile/texting-driving-phones/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

They say smartphone accidents are becoming the new DUI.  Imagine having to go to classes to get your license back because you're hooked on your phone?

I definitely disagree with the talking ban, but I'll be honest: it scares me to death when I'm driving with someone who's texting.  If you pay attention to the driver, you can easily tell that his/her reactions are slower and that he/she doesn't pay as much attention.  I also have a friend who almost died in a car accident because he was texting :/

I seen 2 crashes right in front of me, both were while getting my daughter from and to the bus, both were because of texting. 1st one was in the afternoon, 22 year old male rear ended the stopped car at 50mph, both cars totaled both to the hospital and the other was in the morning, 30 something female hit the rear of a stopped truck at about 30mph (she was skidding, to late to stop), totaled her truck (S10 blazer hit a full size ford expedition), passenger of the expedition went to the hospital (8 months pregnant) All this with my daughter only in 4th grade (time frame example) and with me less then 50 feet from both crashes.

Cell phones while driving, bad, talking or God forbid texting... I bet there is way more crashes over cell phones then we know about, I mean how many people are going to say "I was on my phone" when the crash happened?

Insanely dangerous.

The only time i've allowed myself to use my phone while driving in the past month was 2 days ago when I came back home after finals, and that was only because I was in deadlock traffic for 90 minutes with my roommate in his car just 200 feet behind me.

Needs to be illegal and treated as DUI's in my opinion. The way I come home from work is on a winding road through a forest, and is usually late at night which is already pretty risky, but about a month ago one guy was coming around a curve and literally didn't turn, and went flying off the side through my lane right in front of me. I pulled over, called 911 of course, and got out to go help him. He wasn't too beat up but his car was boned, asked him wtf and he said he was texting. I nearly got smashed by someone texting and driving, nuff said.

A lot of states already passed the law to make it illegal to text and talk on cell phones unless it has blue tooth or hands free.  People still do it in those states.  The Government needs to stop worrying about little shit and get working on all the bigger stuff.

So far I'm the only one who said keep it legal. If you make it illegal people will STILL do it and they will try to hide it while driving meaning they will be looking down or to the side which makes it even MORE dangerous.

I think I once read an article about how the brain hates people who use bluetooths because it can't gauge who the person is talking too.

I was with my mom the first day of classes this last semester when some dude plowed into the back of her car in between classes. Totaled her civic and gave a mean fucking pain in the neck for a week or so. The kid was on the phone behind us. He goes to the same school I do and I occasionally see him around. Fucker

Its illegal to talk or text even with a wireless headset here in California, but does that stop anybody. No?  Making it illegal anywhere won't help. In my opinion, if people are stupid enough to text and drive, then let them crash.  Less population and less retardation in our gene pool. And hopefully any of the innocent people that get hurt in crashes can sue the hell out of those who were the cause.  As for the innocent ones that die, well that's unfortunate, but driving is always dangerous and hopefully their families get some form of restitution. Those texters will have to live knowing they killed somebody with a text.  Its ridiculous, nearly everybody I see driving is on the phone or texting.  They might as well be drunk.

I don't get how they can enforce this.  You can easily see if someone is talking or texting on their phone somtimes.  But what if they're on speakerphone, or what if they are texting in their lap?  And I use my phone as an iPod and play music through it on my car speakers.  What if I want to change songs and get pulled over for texting?  It's kinda like seatbelts, they won't pull you over JUST for that (maybe in some states).  But if you get into an accident, do they have the right to look at your phone and see if you were talking/texting...

In most states, if not all, yes they do (remember "The Patriot Act"?), if they have any reason what so ever that you could have been on your phone at the time of the accident. I seen it first hand... There was an accident in front of my house that I was on top of when it happened, I told the cop when I went to the truck I seen a phone on her lap (the driver) and she could have been on it when the accident happened (she rear ended another truck), she said "thank you and we will check the times with her cell phone records".

Just a site to read about your so called cell "privacy" http://communications-media.lawyers.com/privacy-law/Cell-Phone-Privacy.html

Same thing with this facebook account crap that cops and the news get into to make more news over something that has happened. Do you really think all these people have their facebooks open to the public? No, they are hacked by law endorsement for the info they are looking for.

As far as I am concerned, we have the biggest balls there is, yes maybe to big, after all it's our big balls that makes us feel we have to save the world from itself, but yet forget there are homeless, broken down schools and so on right here. What pisses me off, we send a $600,000 missile to blow up a $5,000 building, then pay $1,000,000 to rebuild the damn 5 grand building, um yea, that makes lots of sense.

Perhaps so, but America is only saving the world from America. Genius way to build an Empire, if you ask me.
