So I need new Ram for my computer. Can anyone tell me if this looks good? It has all the specs I need. If there is something better, but cheaper let me know. I am fucking tired of my computer fucking shutting down!

If you haven't already see what the price would be here: http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx

That's the same place I bought mine when I built my comp. Same brand also. NO problems and it's been about a year.
-
Egghead's got great prices, ram it down.
-
$60 is too much for this kind of RAM. I got my Kingston PC2-6400 (about the same specs too) for about $30 at a weekend sale. Do you have Fry's Electronics where you are? They have weekend deals and you can find this there sometimes.

Ya you can get this exact ram for around $30-$40 at another place, but I can't think of the website at the moment.

My college uses this brand, its cas latency is better than the brand you linked, but that will only effect you by probably 1-2% or not at all in most situations.
This brand is reliable, but you're still getting what you payed for.

So I ran this and it said tha I can put up to 8GB of ram, now I had this guy who says he "knows" computers and told me that since I have a 32 bit system, that only 4GBs will be reconginized. Is this true? Should I go for the 8 or stick with the 4?
-
i also think that more than 4 GB is only possible on a 64-Bit system. i'm not really sure, so maybe someone else will help you out.
and if i remember correctly, xp can only handle max 4GB. again not 100% sure.
idk about vista.

If you put 8GB in a 32 bit system, it will only read 2-3.2 GB. Not exactly sure on the decimal place number but I know that it won't be reading it all. It's not worth it to get that much and plus you won't even be using it all even if it did read. If you have a motherboard that supports DDR3, you could put like 12 GB or more and it would read all.

3.2gig is how much it will recognize in most cases, but that really depends on how much onboard, video, and system memory you have. 32 basically means 2^32 which is 4,294,967,296 (My math is probably a tad off) GB of total memory a 32 bit OS can acknowledge.
You need a 64 bit OS if you put in more than 4gig. 2^64 = 17,179,869,184 GB.

Ok, one more question, how can I test my ram to see what stick is bad?
-
How do you know it's the ram? Run This (http://www.memtest.org) program and it will give you errors that it finds.
Try moving the ram to different slots, it could be the slot itself causing the problem. I honestly suggest just buying a new MOBO that is compatible with DDR3.

I was having issues with the program for some reason so I said fuck it and ordered new ram. We shall see what happens. Worst case I send it back.

You're supposed to save it to a CD and run it before your OS starts up :P
-
Just tie your desktop to a male goat. It'll have plenty of RAM then.

I did exactly what it said to do, but it wouldn't work.

When was the last time you updated your bios?

When was the last time you updated your bios?
LOL. Ummmmmm, I don't think I have ever done that. I don't even know how.
-
Find out what motherboard you have if you put it together yourself. If it's an HP or name brand, then their websites will have the update. Sometimes you can update it without having to save the update to cd, but you can only be so lucky.

This has some pretty detailed steps on how to update it. Make sure you read the safety steps or you can completely screw up your computer.

Well before I could do it, my computer started to act retarded. I do have a question, if the ram is really fucked, would it stop my computer from booting up? The fucking thing won't even boot up anymore. It starts and the fan for the processor and the fan on the video card start and then they just fucking run. Does it sound like ram or my mother board???? I am on my laptop now and need to get this fucking thing fixed cause I won't be able to get in game. What do I need to do?
-
Bad RAM does cause bootup problems. Do you hear beeping sounds or get blue screens also?
I don't think your cpu and videocard would start up if your motherboard was faulty, but you may want to look into buying a new mobo if you can find one for cheap that supports ddr3.
-
Yes I have had a few blue screens and beeping sounds. I don't think it is my mobo either cause I switched the ram around and it worked for a bit and then took a shit. I have new ram coming. It should be here with in the next day or two. So it sounds like the ram?

Ya
-
alright, well my fingers are crossed. I will let you know what happens when I put it in. Thanks for your help if it works. If not I will be back!!!!!
-
Got the new Ram today, I put it into the first two slots and it didn't work, so I guess those slots went bad. However I put it into my other two slots and BAM, I am back up and running. Now hopefully that is the fix I needed. Thanks for the help!

You didn't try switching the original ram into different slots first?

HAHAHAHA, yes I did switch the origianl ram around. I tried everything you said to do. LOL. Replacing the ram was the only way to find the problem and it seems fixed, (FINGERS STILL CROSSED). I have had no issues so far and I am doing everything that I did before to cause it to act up. It was when I got the new RAM and put it into the first two slots, that it acted up. Then I switched it, and it works great. I also updated my BIOS and everything else. So, thank you very much!!!!
