I am going to take the gif apart later and see what happened... The more I look at it the more it looks as if the explosion happened near his ass and not the tube (well the tube was a secondary pop).

Looks like a hot tube. It happens when they fire off more rounds then the tube can handle. The round basically starts to "cook", heat up on the way down to the firing pin. Then once it gets hot enough, it will blow up instead of having the primer hit by the firing pin which will send the rocket part out.
I am sure most of you have seen "We were soldiers" when Mel Gibson told them to piss on the mortor tubes to cool them off, well, someone didn't piss on his tube. Maybe I am wrong and missing something.

Scoob's video post from the gif... It looks like at 3 seconds, he gets his head blow off.
I took the above vid and slowed it down as best I could, this is the frame right at the time of Boom.
I think what I have circled is his head or parts of him attached.

But as you can see, yes it was the mortar and not some other delivery.
