Title: this is an outrage
Post by: mulletike on May 17, 2006, 11:38:43 AM
FUN WITH SURVEILLANCE. Turns out the NSA, with the collaboration of every phone company except Qwest, is monitoring all of our calls -- not to listen in to what's being said, but simply to gather data about the calls and draw inferences from that. It's important to link this up to the broader chain. One thing the Bush administration says it can do with this meta-data is to start tapping your calls and listening in, without getting a warrant from anyone. Having listened in on your calls, the administration asserts that if it doesn't like what it hears, it has the authority to detain you indefinitely without trial or charges, torture you until you confess or implicate others, extradite you to a Third World country to be tortured, ship you to a secret prison facility in Eastern Europe, or all of the above. If, having kidnapped and tortured you, the administration determines you were innocent after all, you'll be dumped without papers somewhere in Albania left to fend for yourself.

Once you start in with this business, it's a widening cycle of lawlessness with almost endless possibilities for abuse. Tellingly, the reason Qwest wound up not cooperating with the NSA on this is that the NSA couldn't be bothered to get a court order. Shame on the other phone companies for simply giving in to a request without legal backing.

Anyone else think this is an outrage?

Please...if you dont have anything to hide why are you freaking out about it? Im sure Bush doesn't really care about the conversations between my mother and I. Or the dirty calls between Phantom and Bone. I would gladly give up a portion of my "rights" to help keep me safe. I have nothing to hide. Why is it such a big deal if the big brother listens into some of our phone calls? I can understand how its a "rights" thing and people just get pissed becuase of...ohh they are taking my rights away but come on. I dont WANT people listening to my conversations but if its going to possibly keep bad things from happening in this country Id let them.

It doesn't matter if you have anything to hide, if you happen to say something they don't like.... Hopefully you read what I said.  Obviously we need a safe country, but remember Nixon?  What do you think Nixon would have done if he had power like that?

You must be very neive. If you say something they dont like they will have a reason for it. The jails are too overcrowded anyway. They aren't just going to start putting people away for stupid reasons.

I am the farthest thing from naive, and I do not think that the government will start throwing people in jail for bad reasons(bad example, I admit it) but still, if Bush(or his administration for that matter) has that kind of power what kind of nation are we turning into?  Security is important, but Bush seems to think that the rules don't apply to him.  Not that I think that Bush is making all the decisions, he obviously ratify's them, but its his administration that is behind all this, im certain of it:(

They dont listen in on everyone lol they only listen in to people they suspect are dealling with terrorism or in a relation to it.

If you call you're dealer and say "Hey man I need a sack of premo weed" they could care less.

The nsa has about 4,000 employee's and only a few of them are doing the phone tapping do you think they can listen to the 1+ trillion calls a day made in the us? ;)

Its not that I am afraid of my rights or anything like that, its just the principal.  Of course if something like 9/11 happened again people would criticize Bush for not trying harder to find terrorists etc...   Its just that the NSA isn't the KGB, you know?  Its a fine line, but I suppose compared to something like 9/11 happening again I would allow it, to tell the truth I am just disappointed in the state of affairs this world is in right now, you know?

This has been going on for years my boy.  There are computers that moniter calls and internet logs and they search for specific words and flag it.  Its not some psycho movie.  We actually have a department that does this for the state.  Big bro is watching.

I herd from my grandma that works with the state that there are key word that will turn on a recording device that will listen to your hole conversation.
She said that if you say any thing that is one of the key words like osama binladen or any thing els like that to triger the recording device. Im not saying this is how they really do it but its just what i herd. My friend had the feds at his door because he said some thing on the phone and they whatched him for about a month.

on the wire tapping subject its quite funny

now they have phone calls from before 9/11, but back then they couldnt connect the dots

now they are trying to connect the dots, but i guess everyone is upset, i really dont care if the NSA is listening to me tell people on the phone to pick up milk, idk why u would

use VOip for ur activites, which u dont want anyone knowing about (supcious), the gov't doesnt have a way to track it (or didnt before)

Just because it's on the internet doesn't make it "real". Don't believe everything you read. Do some more research. I get tired of people quoting things off the internet saying that it is the gospels truth just to prove their point.

This was originaly quoted from usatoday.com, although you can't believe everything you hear anywhere, it is a pretty trusted source.  If you can't believe a big newspaper like that, what can you trust?

well one thing i learned in colorado you can never trudt the news or news papers, reporters come up asking quitions that have nothing to do with what really happend. Like the other day news 9 came up to me and asked all this quitions about stuff that happend at my sisters school. All that happend was some guy TRYED to take off with some kid. They where saying that there was shooting and the kid was tooken when i know that nothing happend.

Your reference was from the American Prospect. That magazine is very liberal and far to the left. It's benefactors are those who would benefit from the defamation of this administration .
Now all of sudden your mentioning the USA Today. Go read that article again.
Quote from the USA Today

"Actually, the program doesn't involve monitoring the content of telephone conversations, USA TODAY reported. The NSA is expert at using computers to review vast quantities of digital data — such as phone numbers — to identify patterns of activity."

A true debate is one that is based on facts. Not politically motivated jargon as yours is.

All right, this is my last word on the subject, okay?  I have gotten alot of negative feedback about how I feel about this, about how it doesn't matter, well of course it doesn't!  I doubt any of you will get in trouble for anything, and obviously there are alot of different sides to this, and we want a safe country, but there are laws.  This is not fact or anything like that, but while looking up the subject I came across this.  It says exactly how I feel about wiretapping.  We are all allowed an opinion, so don't call me an idiot just because it does't coincide with yours.

Listen kid the fastest way to piss people off is to start talking religion and/or politics. Especially if you don't know those people and you are trying to get to know them. Your digging yourself a deeper hole with every post.
