Post by: *MAFIA* KrautKiller on September 18, 2006, 09:30:41 PM
Well, as of today my sister  has, just about done my computer in with all the junk she has downloaded, i get 4 popups every minute or so.  Does anyone know of a decent free spyware deleter.  Ive already used spysweeper so i cant download that again.

I have removed more spyware from peoples computers in my lifetime than anybody should ever have to...  I have had nightmares about weatherbug... very disturbing.. but anyway...

You will first want to download what I like to call the holy trinity of spyware removal.

Ad-Aware
 (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5)
Spybot (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?part=dl-spybot&subj=dl&)

Microsoft Anitspyware (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en) (now known as Windows Defender)

but it sounds like you are hijacked, to get rid of these you will need to download Hi-Jack this. (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip)

To use this program just run the .exe after and save the log file. Then upload the logfile to this site (http://hijackthis.de/). It will give you a summary of what is hi-jacked and what isn't. Remove what the site list as "unsafe" and you should be set... if you are still getting popup's after running all these programs then just hit me up with a PM or on Messenger and I can help you further.

Do not refer to computer software as being a holy trinity.  This post actually helped me out a lot as well, so thanks.  But before I take any action, I must ask the noob question of the day - do I download all 3, or just choose one from the "trifecta?"

Sorry if referring to software in a religious manner offends you Juice, it's just that when I was removing spyware and fixing computers for a living I had to come up with something to call the "trifecta" and i'm just not as clever as most :).

Anyway, if you want "complete protection" then you must download all three. Windows Defender provides the real-time protection and ad-aware and spybot provide the comprehensive scans that pick up what slips by.

I was just kidding Balth, I wasn't offended.  The reason I ask about the Spyware is because I use AdAware, and it seems to work fine, so I was wondering if I needed to call in for backup or let it continue to go solo.

Nice choice of programs Evan, I too use Ad-Aware and Windows Defender.  They're two very, nice free programs to have to protect your computer.
