Here's the Question:
You are the network administrator for a Windows Server 2003 network. The Windows Server 2003 computer has a single 40 GB hard disk drive containing operating system files, as well as a shared folder. Only five users on the network have Write access to the shared folder that they use to store large Excel spreadsheet files, which they create every day. Due to the size of these files, disk space is being consumed very rapidly. How could you resolve the problem?
My Answer:
I would first upgrade the existing 40GB hard disk to a 2 terabyte hard disk for roughly $200. Deleting unneeded files, that are outdated or not needed anymore would also appear to be a solution. Compressing files that are changed rarely would be very helpful if all the files are needed.
To upgrade the existing hard disk, I would set the new large hard disk into the master, and the old 40GB hard disk into the slave to get the existing files off the old disk.

The answer I was looking for was data compression. While you mention it briefly you do not consider it as a real option.

Who the fuck compresses their files? More disk space is ALWAYS the answer, though I'd just buy a few seperate 1tb drives for $80 each... save some cash

So you were meant to just ask the 5 users to compress their excel files before uploading them to the shared folder? Seems straight forward.

I think what he wanted/looking for was a easy, fast fix as the "1st step" with the compression of the drive and then possibility of a upgrade later... You being the ADMIN of the server is all that would have taken for the compression, the "user" would have no reason to believe or even know their files were being compressed to save space, in other words their interaction of compression what have not been needed because compression of the files would have happened automatically because of your ADMIN command for them to be compressed when being written to the drive (shared folder).
Easy way to compress... right click over the drive, properties, general tab, check box "compress drive to save disk space".
I am assuming he wanted you to compress the drive, no down down time what so ever, not to remove any so called out dated files... When it comes to a business, no file is "ever" out dated, save, save and save some more.
Above is just my thought, I could be way off, but hell it sounded good to me.

The operating system files are on the same drive so if you compressed the whole drive it could make them un-executable. I think the shared folder only needs to be compressed and since the excel files are added every day zipping them before uploading them would be a simple option.

If I remember correctly on Win 95 and above (win NT, severs and so on) when you compress a drive it doesn't touch the OS files, only 3rd party programs and what ever is written to/by them.

If your professor is asking questions like that it's obvious they have never administrated a Server 2003 enterprise network. You can tell him I said that, give him my e-mail too. :)

Well this is what i would do, i would leave the 40gig hd where it is, and i would put the 1tb hd as a slave and save all the files on the tb hd.The only down time would be putting the hd in. (which should be no more then 5 mins..) O0
