Help / budget computer build help
« on: May 18, 2011, 09:46:02 PM »
i'm convincing my parents to get rid of their 2003 Dell and upgrade since my little sister managed to wreak havok on it when she downloaded a shit ton of viruses a few days ago. They wanted a budget computer that would stay useful for as long as possible. I want to throw ubuntu on it so my sister doesn't break it again.

Here's the build I tried to set up for lowest price but modest performance, any tweaks or improvements you guys can suggest?

http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ar/agj/

AMD Phenom 3.2 dual core processor
ASRock M3A770DE ATX AM3 Motherboard
Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
EVGA GeForce GT 430 1GB Video Card
Broadway Com Corp 939PL-BLACK ATX Mid Tower Case w/550W Power Supply

I was also wondering what sort of experiences any of you have had with linux before. My mom will probably only use it for typing/email/watching movies, so it doesn't need to be super fancy, budget is 350 firm. I was wondering what driver support is like with Ubuntu, if using torrents is any different, etc.

Help / computer help, of course
« on: September 08, 2010, 10:32:24 PM »
ok, so I've got a media center-ish computer upstairs that my folks use to watch/burn dvd's on, and the power push-button recently went out. I took out the old one, and i'm sure i can put in a new one...but I don't know the name of the cable.

It's a 9-pin female cable with a long orange and blue wire ending in a push-button for the front of a dell computer tower (it isn't a stock dell, I just used the case). It's got a sticker wrapped around it that reads "6Y702 Tested, Foxconn C" and the date "Feb-28-04."

Installing it isn't a problem since it's just a plug and use piece of equipment, but the name/link to a replacement cable would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I know a lot of you guys here read/follow the bible, wondering what everyone thinks about this.
Doubt many will read the whole thing, but it's an interesting read none the less.

Help / Internet...HALP!
« on: October 25, 2009, 09:14:55 PM »
Ok, yet another computer issue. At my new apartment i didn't bother setting up internet because there's like 8 other wireless connections around me with 4/5 signal strength, so i figured i'd use that instead of paying for it.

Most of them are clearly owned by women (router names like "urbancowgirl" and "keelys" and "diana") so naturally they didn't bother changing the default passwords on their wireless. About 3 minutes of guessing landed me with 5 router passwords (either "admin" or "password"), so i thought i'd be set.

I know the passwords are correct because it now does the "auto connect" whenever i turn my netbook on, showing that the passwords are saved and correct. But here's the issue...it always says "limited to no connectivity. Could not renew your IP address." 4/5 signal reception, correct passwords...st ill won't connect.

I've checked a butt ton of sites and forums on the matter, downloaded a fix from microsoft (winsock or something like that), tried resetting it in command prompt (ipconfig/renew i think) and plenty of other remedies...all with no luck.

Anyone know what to do? It's frustrating as hell knowing that the password is correct and the signal strength is excellent, but it still will not connect. HALP!

I'm pretty sure this isn't "illegal" per se, just sort of mooching. Either way i figure we'll keep it in the members section. If one of you computer whizz kids get it to work, i'll throw nude pix of roommate on the secrets forum.

Ted Kennedy

Most of mafia is pretty right leaning, so i don't expect many ted kennedy fans here, but the guy was a pretty big player in liberal lawmaking. First kennedy to actually die a normal-ish death...

Didn't Left 4 Dead come out this year?  And now the sequel comes out in November...
yup, Left 4 Dead 2 is just L4D with updates, it's pretty much paying 50 bucks for a patch.

Help / Linksys Router
« on: April 28, 2009, 05:25:01 PM »
Alright, i've been using a bottom of the line 4-port wired router for the 3 computers at my house so far, but since my little sister is getting her netbook tomorrow, and i'm getting mine friday, i figured i need to setup a wireless network so we dont have 50 ft cables running all over the floor.

So the router i have now has had no problems, super easy to setup, pretty much just plug-n-play. We also have a Linksys WRK54G wireless router, but never set it up because the one we already have hasn't had any problems thus far. We don't have the install disc for the linksys router, so i browsed around online to find the drivers for it.

The first step in finding the driver had me enter in the version number, which is right after the model number (WRK54G). The one we have has nothing after the model number, so i'm assuming it is version 1.0 (earliest).

I have no idea what i'm doing, and the .pdf on linksys' site made me shit my pants it had so many steps. Does anyone know how to set up this kind of router?

And what steps to i need to take? i assumed i should just get the driver (easier said than done), put it on a flash drive and install the driver on all my computers, then unplug my d-link router and switch it with the linksys wireless router, restart the computers, then i'm done.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for being tech-tarded, i fucking hate routers. And before some smart ass responds with "Google is your friend," i did check "linksys WRK54G Driver" and all of the links i found were either dead (even the link to linksys' site had a could not connect to server error), or led to forums with no useful links.

General / Netbook?
« on: April 22, 2009, 09:42:36 AM »
So here's the business, gonna be getting a place of my own in San Luis Obispo in late summer/early fall for school, and i plan on taking my desktop but i need some portability too. My rig will be used for gaming and entertainment and the like, but i was looking at possibly a netbook for school purposes.

So i didn't want to spend more than around 300 bucks for a basic one, anyone have any experience with them? I know they're relatively new, but for portability and battery life they look like a pretty attractive deal. I absolutely hate laptops and refuse to ever buy one, so i figured this would be a reasonable middle ground.

How's this one looking?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220441&nm_mc=OTC-C173T&cm_mmc=OTC-C173T-_-Netbooks-_-ASUS-_-34220441

300 bucks
160GB HD
1GB RAM (i'll upgrade to 2GB)
8.9 widescreen
N270 1.6 GHZ Atom processor
Wi-Fi
5.3 Hr. battery life (supposedly)

Best of all, it runs bf1942 smoothly at 30-40fps

So how's it look? Good entry level netbook? Remember, i'm shooting for cheap most of all, and the ability to tote it around school without looking like a douche with a huge lappy bag, this thing will just fit in my backpack.

Spam / New Monitor
« on: November 19, 2008, 12:56:50 AM »
So two days ago I finally upgraded from my tiny 15 inch LCD monitor to the new Samsung T220 22 inch widescreen. All I have to say is...holy shit. I mean seriously, this thing is beyond boners, and picked it up for a fair price I would say, 250 bucks.

Just figured I'd share, it's a pretty huge difference and I completely dig it. LOL, I just realized this is my first "dutch bragging" thread where I talk about the newest piece of technology I just blew my money on. Oh well.

Help / A little help please...
« on: November 10, 2008, 05:19:18 PM »
Alright, to sum it up what i need help with, i'm having some troubles cutting through glass.
I'm currently making a bong for a friend of mine, and I'm using a POM glass cup as the body.

I've got a ton of the glass bottles that POM juice used to come in, so I figured I'd make a few unique bongs out of them. Only trouble is, it's a rounded surface, and I'm trying to drill a hole in the body of it at a downward angle.

The glass cup looks like this...

And i'm trying to make it look a bit like this...

Only trouble is, I can't seem to cut into it without getting massive cracks around the hole, or accidentally chipping huge pieces out of it.

Anyone know how I should go about this? We've got a ton of drill bits and such, I just don't know where to start. Someone advised a diamond cutter, but I'd like to make it without having to trek to the hardware store and buy diamond tip bits (i know they're cheap, i just would like to avoid having to get one).

Thanks in advance.

Help / MP3 player help?
« on: August 10, 2008, 02:52:10 PM »
i got a sansa e260 4GB model on woot.com a month or so ago for 45 bucks, and got a freeware player OS that overrides the original firmware called rockbox.

It works great, has awesome features and the battery lasts for ever, but when i first installed rockbox, it added and "updated" itself to add all the songs in the library already on the mp3 player, and added it to the rockbox list so i didn't have to re-synch all my music again.

But here's the problem...i've added about 3 or 4 CD's worth of music onto the player, and it's not "updating" itself, so i can't play the music that i just added because it doesn't think it's there.

When i first start up the mp3 player, if i hold the left button, it will load in the original firmware and not in rockbox, so i did that, and the original sansa firmware has "detected" all the songs i recently added.

So here's my question, how do i get my rockbox firmware to "detect" or "refresh" it's library so i can play stuff i just added? It's kind of hard to explain, so if clarification is needed, just say and i'll try to explain myself better. Thanks in advance.
