Help / ***READ THIS***

This section is to genuinely help anybody who may be having problems with linux, and to inform people about linux and its capabilities.

Any flame threads should be put in the SPAM section, and particularly annoying flamers will be banned from this section.

This is NOT a no rules section of the forum:

Ok things:
-Posting articles for/against linux
-Requesting assistance
-Posting informative threads
-Posting tutorials

Not ok things (tux will bite your nuts / tits off):
-General Flame...("ZOMG MY NAME IS DIABLO...I DONT HAVE ANY CLUE WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT...BUT LINUX SUX!!! LOLZORZ!!!!")
-Stuff that isnt linux related (probably a mistake and will be moved to proper section without consequences.. .unless spamming is apparent.)

REMEMBER!: Starting an argument by posting some reputable information you have found is OK...But make sure you have links to some evidence before you go talking about shit that you have no idea about.

Spam / Setup an FTP server on linux.
« on: September 04, 2005, 12:04:54 PM »
HELLO BOYS AND GIRLS!!!

Today we will be installing vsftpd(very secure ftp daemon)!!

with apt-get, again, it is rediculously simple to install.

run the command

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install vsftpd

and let it do its thing. Within a matter of seconds you will have a brand new shiney ftp server installed.

For you not apt-get havers...here is instructions for manual install!

Configuring your anonymous (by default) ftp server.
Right now people can connect to your ftp server with the username "anonymous" and any password they may wish to enter. They can download anything you put in your /home/ftp file on your server...howev er they cannot upload anything...yet .

Anonymous Uploads:
I will now explain how to make a directory that anonymous users will be able to upload files to, however they will not be able to download eachothers files...and only you will be able to access those files.

First run the command:
Code: [Select]
sudo mkdir -m 2733 /home/ftp/upload
This will make an upload directory in your anonymous ftp folder.

Now you must edit your ftp configuration file...
Run this command...
Code: [Select]
sudo vi /etc/vsftpd.conf
Hit [Insert] on your keyboard and you will be able to edit the file. Scroll down to where you will see "#write_enable=YES" remove the # so the line will now look like "write_enable=YES".
Then scroll down to where you will see the line "#anon_upload_enable=YES" and remove the # so it says "anon_upload_en able=YES".

Now press [ESC] on your keyboard and type "!wq" (without the quotes.) then hit return and you will be back to your shell...Howeve r your changes wont have taken effect.

Now restart your ftp server by running the command
Code: [Select]
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart

and voila...youve got yourself an anonymous download FTP, that anyone can download files from...with a directory that anyone can upload to, but only you may see the files.

Linux server box tutorial with UBUNTU
Getting your box ready for install:
Go into your system BIOS, (accessable at boot with something like f2 or del key.) Set your cd drive as the primary boot device if it isnt already. Also if you have onboard graphics set their system usage all the way down to something like 8mb of memory...its all command line and you barely need any graphics capability at all, thats right ALL command line...get used to it. Once that is done you are ready to install UBUNTU Linux.
Getting an UBUNTU disk:
Ubuntu is an absolutely free operating system. They will EVEN ship the disks to you at no cost. They even pay shipping. But if you dont want to wait a week to get your disk I suggest you download an ISO image and burn it to a blank disk. Just as easy...but faster.
Go Here... and under "Install CD" (NOT live cd!) select your system architechture. ..which is most likely gonna be the fist one, i386.
Once you have downloaded the ISO file use your favorite CD burner to burn it to a disk...make sure to use the ISO burn system...and not just copy the ISO file to the disk...there is a difference.
Installing UBUNTU:
Place the disk in your disk drive and reboot the computer. You will get a fancy little boot screen with the ubuntu logo on it. NOTE: We only want the BASE install...so instead of just hitting enter...type "server" (without the quotes) and hit the return key. You will be taken through a semi-GUI installer. Pretty easy to follow. And you should be done with the install in anywhere from 10-45 minutes...Depe nding on your system.
It will ask you to remove the cd and reboot...Do so, and let it go through its initial startup process (it will configure packages for your computer.) Once this is done you will login with the username and password you gave it and VOILA...you have a nice little UBUNTU server.
Accessing your server remotely:
Installing the SSH server, (how you will connect remotely) on ubuntu is rediculously easy. While the system is booted up and logged in. Simply put the UBUNTU disk in the disk drive and enter this command:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ssh

Simple as that...enter your account password and say yes to the "are you sure..." and it is installed and running.

I suggest putty ssh as a client on your desktop computer.

There you have it boys and girls...a very easy way to get a linux server setup and running in less than an hour...Enjoy.. .and post here for any technical problems you may have. Me or Rahl will try to help you in any way we can.

I will make different threads on how to install an ftp server...game servers...etc. ..
