Help / Why does version 1.61b update trash my ping and/or FPS???
« on: March 17, 2006, 08:12:43 AM »
Hey doods and doodettes....

I have never been able to successfully upgrade to the 1.61b patch. While it installs, it either trashes my ping or FPS when I update the multiplayer server list.

Everything is fine as the game loads: I click on the "multiplayer" button and then "internet" (or something like that), but as soon as I click "update" everything slows down and gets really choppy.

Even my mouse moves in "steps" rather than moving continuously. Ping rates go jump up in the hundreds (and even thousands) and makes the game unplayable (tho' I can connect to 1.61 games).

I've always had the same result each of the (several) times I have tried to update. The 1.61 games are the only place I see this (apparent) internet slowdown. Im using a patch switcher and 1.6 runs fine, but 1.61 always gets the same crappy result.

It does not affect my internet browser. I don't really know much about these darn demon boxes, but I suppose it could be FPS instead of ping. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

More info

My comp stats

Dell Dimension 2400
Celeron processor @ 2.4 ghz
504 MB RAM
128 MB ATI Radeon 9200 PCI card
Windows XP SP2

Also...

I shut off all other programs except for McAfee virus protect., although I get the same result with McAfee turned off. I can connect to all the 1.61 servers, but the lowest ping rate is 100-200, and it is so choppy that its unplayable (I estimate about 4 frames per second Sad ).

I don't think it is RAM, I think it is a connection problem. I realize .5 MB of RAM ain't a lot, but it's plenty for 1.6.

We use cable internet and both wifey and I connect thru a Netgear wireless router. I've considered that the router is the problem, but why does it only affect 1.61?

Other have suggested that a Windows firewall might be holding it up b/c it does not recognize 1.61 as having full permissions for internet access, but I've tried shutting that off too and still get the same result.

It's been a while since I updated drivers, but I have had this problem when update was initially released in December '04. I'll try driveragent.co m to see if all is up to date.

I clean my PC with spybot regularly. Still no love,

Thanks,

KONA
