From Tweakguides.com

Video.con

This setting controls your current resolution in Battlefield 2. The format is Width x Height@Refresh Rate. If you cannot start up BF2 and change the resolution from within the game, try altering it here to help you startup the game. In particular when you want to launch BF2 for the first time and the game just crashes back to desktop (See Troubleshootin g Tips section), you can change the resolution from its default of 800x600@60Hz to one your monitor supports. Note however that certain resolutions are unsupported and entering them here will not work.

So bascially open up your Video.com file in notepad and change the value of "VideoSettings. setResolution" to your desired resolution and refresh rate and BF2 should open up with the newly inputed setting. So for example if your resolution is set at "VideoSettings. setResolution 1280x960@75Hz" and it won't open try changing it to "VideoSettings. setResolution 1024x768@60Hz".

Hope this helps.

hey thanks a lot for that help. another thing, would it be possible to set a custom resolution such as 1680 x 1050 (which is my monitor desktop resolution) or does bf2 just not support it?

From Tweakguide.com

Update: As of the 1.3 Patch, you can no longer set Ultra High quality, the highest value which works for these settings is 3, which is also the maximum possible when using the in-game settings.

According to this you probably won't be able to set your resolution to what you have your Windows desktop as.

Any other questions can be directed towards this site.

Try this dumb raghead. Right click on the bf2 shortcut on your desktop, click on the shortcut tab, copy and paste this in the target area "C:\Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050 or w/e drive letter you have bf2 installed on..If this doesnt work kill yourself.
