The news is incredibly biased. I know that there are 13 dead, however, depending on who you listen to, his motives are different. Extreme right wings say that he has links to people over in Afghanistan and that, because he was a Muslim, he must be doing it for terrorists. Other people say that he was just angry about being shipped off to fight a war that he doesn't support. Who knows what to believe these days...
Edit: My dad watches a news show called The News Hour with Jim Lehrer every weeknight. It is actually a very good, mostly non-biased news show. If anybody wanted to see it, there was a really interesting discussion about the Ft. Hood tragedy. Here is a site to access tonight's episode.
