fubar monitor
« on: May 31, 2007, 05:51:32 PM »

my monitor went wacky for no reason today when i turned it on, it has verticle neon green bands, about 4 inches away from each other and about 2 inches wide. Then there is horizontal neon purple and green going side to side and i can barely even read what i'm typing. It's a good monitor, 17 inch flag screen cathode style monitor from dell, bought in 2001. It's supposed to be a plug and play monitor so i don't think there are drivers for it. Any suggestions as to why it's fubar? How do i find out what model i have? Thanks for the help in advance.

All I have to say on this, is that pc screens do not live forever. Have you tried connection a different to your pc? If so if that did help you then maby buy a new screen ;)

don't have another computer, but we do have an extra screen we just bought. Might have to use that.

Magnets and computer screens don't mix.

Magnets and computer screens don't mix.

Neither does the penis.  Well sometimes....

Unplug it and then wait for a coplue minutes, then plug it back into another outlet.  This probably won't solve much, but I read somewhere that it might help.  If you still have warranty or an extended warranty, you can use Dell Chat to "fix" the problem or try to get a new one.  You can't really fix and LCD.

If it's a CRT, try degaussing it.  My other monitor, a CRT, went crazy one day like this and that procedure worked.

how do i degauss it?

Well i did what chris said, updated my graphics card drivers and now it's acting like i don't have the drivers installed at all. Super choppy when i scroll, and really laggy when loading pictures. Guess i'll just system restore, and probably have to buy a new screen.

Is it a CRT? It'll be in the menu when you press the buttons on monitor, just look for it.  If it's an LCD, you can not do this.

When you install new drivers, you have to un-install the old graphics drivers.

I had a green line on the top of the screen that would come and go.  It was actually mt graphics card.  Not saying that is your problem but if you have another monitor you may wanna try that for a bit and see if it still does it.

update: It's not the monitor. I switched monitors and had the same effect on a new 22" LCD display. I updated graphics card a few days ago and it made half of the screen okay, but the right side is still fucked up. Did system restore to about a week ago, back to completely fucked up. Chris said it's the same effect he had happen to his monitor when he overclocked his g-card, i haven't touched the clocking speed on mine.

Yes, it's CRT, tried degauss and got nothing.Reinst alling drivers now, see if it fixes it.
