ASVAB test, what did the few of you get?
« on: August 17, 2010, 01:07:05 AM »

I'm currently studying so I can get atleast a 110 and I'm not sure how hard it is to get that. Really nervous since I won't last long as a grunt.

Dude, don't stress about it!!!  Seriously.  I got a 105 after a night of partying and fucking at the hotel.  Since being in, I retook it and now I have a 113.  What do you need a 110 for?  Is there a particular MOS you are trying for?

I thought the AFQT only went to 99. How are you guys getting scores over 100? Unless your adding the different areas together for a particular job. By the way I had a AFQT of 97.

It is the same thing, but maybe different branches call it either by ASVAB or AFQT.  This tells you how the calculate it and all.  I read a bit, but not much.  Hope it helps.

Took it back in High School, they told us it was 'mandatory', still doubt if that was the case...

But anywho, a couple of years later some Air Force Recruiters come knocking on my door at college trying to get me to enlist because of my supposed ASVAB score. They mentioned 'targeting and acquisitions' if I remember correctly. Naturally I turned them down on the basis that even though they said it was, "just like a video game", there was still another person on the other end that was dead because of what I would be doing.

That's my trip down memory lane for the day. MMMmmmm

110 as what? A GT score? If you get all the questions right on the ASVAB then you would have a score of 99.

Are you taking the test at a school or MEPS? The school version has predetermined questions in the form of written multiple choice questions. The MEPS version is computerized and it adapts to your previous answer (ie: If you got the first question right, then your second question will be a little harder).

You should have no worries on getting a high GT score if you did your work in your English and Mathematics classes.

The AFQT score is to let you know if you are qualified to join. You should have no worries passing the AFQT. If your AFQT score is passing then they compute your ASVAB score. I don't know what service you are going into but I think I remember you posting about the Marines. Here is a website to see the required scores for the MOS you want and how the Marine Corps breaks down the ASVAB.

If you don't understand the break down still, post back with what field you are looking into and I'll tell you what you should focus on.

I meant GT score my bad, I need a GT score of 110 to be a POG, and hopefully be in a job such as data network specialist, or something in the computer or network field.

It doesn't look hard, but I like to ask around from people who have taken things, including their experiences.

4066 - Small Computer Systems Specialist  - is something I was checking out also.

Oh cool. I took the ASVAB in 10th grade, I don't remember my exact GT score but it was enough to do whatever I wanted. If you don't already know, the test is broken down into timed segments. Your GT score is calculated by the sum of your "Word Knowledge", "Paragraph Comprehension", and "Arithmetic Reasoning" scores. You should have no problem with your GT score if you payed attention in Math and English.

Just as a brush up you could also always use a study guide. I used Barron's ASVAB Guidebook before I went in to take the test. It came with practice tests, information about the test structure, study material, and general tips on how to make the most out of it.

Also, check out this thread on leatherneck. It's an 8 year old thread of poolees that posted their ASVAB results and their experiences. It's really moto for me to see those posts and see that some of them are already Sergeants.

As a side note, are you going Active or Reserves? You can't get a guaranteed MOS if you go active, you can only sign into a field.

I'm thinking about active, my friend who's stationed in hawaii said that he got to pick from 3 different MOS.

I would ask your recruiter. I am almost positive you cannot guarantee an MOS without going reserve. You do get a "wish list" at the SOI/MCT after boot camp in which you pick you top three MOS choices within the field you signed into.

You could go that route...

Or, enroll in some certification courses for MCSE, Cisco, Nortel, e.t.c

Doesn't come with all the glitz and glamor of a trip to the sandbox but hey, it's an idea.  ;)

p.s. I love our service men and women.  :-*

I don't look good in all white though :P

I got a 97 on my practice ASVAB at the recruiters office without a calculator or paper lol, I can't believe the median is 50-60 on the test in recent years on the real ASVAB. The marines will pay for my hardware / network certifications and my 4 year degree so it will be nice. Just waiting for my medical documents to be done and then I'm taking the real test.
