Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2 Ready
« on: February 29, 2008, 07:00:59 AM »

For you lucky ones that have not gone to the dark side of Vista...

If you would like to try XP SP3 before Windows update has it out around July, here is...

Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate

Understand this is "out" of Beta, but could still have some bugs in it.

I am going to give it a try, so if you wish to wait for a report back from me on how it installs and performs I will be happy to make a post.

I will start with I am going to do the standalone down load and not the registry string setting for windows update to down load it for me.

what are the main things it fixes?

Which one do we download, the 38kb one, or the 315mb one?

The small file is a string for the registry if you wish to down load by "Windows Update", the bigger files are a installer, 300mb+, make sure you down load the right one, English.

Fixes... Just go to that link and read the release notes.

No, Vista will live. This has been in the works for a very long time, but I would think this will be the last SP for XP.

I made restore point before install.

Install happen with no problem.

During 1st boot, the computer tried to go to "Error Checking", but it stoped so I guess it wasn't needed.

Took forever for 1st start up to happen with all the rewriting of files... For me that was about 4+/-min. My computer will boot from the time of the post screen into windows in around 30 seconds.

Before the complete load of windows I was asked if I wanted to turn on auto update, I clicked no.

Start up screen is the same, color for load indicator is the same, color didn't change like it did when adding the other SP packs.

Unlike SP2, SP3 did NOT turn on the Windows firewall, But my firewall was asking to give permission to "all" the network programs and Explorer, but did not ask for permission for FireFox. So that tells me SP3 has done many changes to the network programs of Windows. No other programs needed permission.

As soon as all my programs were loaded I went to windows update... All of the windows update programs were asking for firewall permission as well... Changes made to Update programs.

No updates were needed after adding SP3 from windows update.

2nd boot... Back to my normal speed of boot time (30+/- seconds), no more no less.

That is it for now... I am going to do a few 3DMark06 test and see what my score is. The internet rummer mill says SP3 gives better performance in Programs, Games, Networking.

EDIT...

3DMarks went from 9115 to 9201. Could be from SP3 or just something different with my system from my last test. In any case 86 points is nothing to jump around about.

Not sure how to reply... I am sure there is some differences on some computers, I am not really seeing much "yet" (other then what I posted above). Lets put it this way... Did you add SP1 and SP2? If so, why not SP3?

Why not SP3? Because if it doesn't do anything important or help my computer run better, why spend time to DL and use it?

It took all of 7 minutes to down load on my shit connection. But yes, it takes about 15min to make back ups and install. Up to you.
