what is this
« on: July 31, 2008, 06:27:06 PM »

Circled in yellow is a thing that come out of my computer.  I had to buy some of this crap and stick it back on there.  However, in the process, the small black thing circled in red came flying off and there's no putting it back in, it won't stick anymore.  So basically the bars or "arms" of the square silver thing (one on top right and one on bottom left), which I'm asking what it is, are just dangling, and its being held by the silver thermal paste linked above.  It appears to be some sort of a heat sink with no value.  Am I in trouble?

In yellow is the North bridge heat sink, the North bridge chip is under it. The North bridge chip is the next hottest thing on the mother board after the CPU. North bridge heat sink MUST be in place or the chip will burn up.

The photo is to small for me to tell what is in Red... So you are saying the "red" is the retainer for the "clip" that holds the heat sink down to the chip? If so, yes you are in trouble if you can not get that heat sink pushed down on the chip like it should be.

So why did you need to put down thermal compound in the 1st place?

Ha, yeah, the clip just came flying out, and when I try to put it back in, the heat sink pulls it back out.  How do I get it to stay?  AH!

Edit...These describe the same thing:

Where can I but a new chip and how do I install it...I'm searching but can't find anything.  PWNED

Don't know... I have to assume the black piece passed into the board and was held in by a nibble of some sort and that nibble broke off.

Something like this...

Nah, the black piece connects to the board by a small metal ring, pictured here on the top left, under the screwdriver.  I can put it back in place, but when I connect the heatsink to it, it comes right out.

I clean it every month, that has nothing to do with a heat sink clip flying off, NOOB.

The guy in reply #3 says that his fell off and he just glued a new one on and its working fine...that seems to be my case.  I haven't clamped it back on to the motherboard, but everything is working fine.  I'm going to call some computer repair shops tomorrow to see if they can solder it on or something.
